caption: Gian Lorenzo BERNINI (1598–1680) 'Apollo and Daphne'. According to classical mythology, Apollo mocked Cupid, god of love, smiling at the fact that he carried bow and arrows. An indignant cupid, he decided to take revenge: he hit the god with the golden arrow that made him fall in love, and the nymph, with whom he knew that Apollo would fall in love, with the lead arrow that made love shy away, to demonstrate to the god what his bow was capable of. Apollo, as soon as he saw the nymph called Daphne, daughter of the river god Peneus, fell in love with it. However, having been hit by Cupid's lead arrow, she ran away when she saw the god. Apollo then began to chase her, listing her powers to convince her to stop, but the nymph continued to run, until, almost exhausted, she arrived at the Peneo river, and asked her father to help her by dissolving her form. Daphne was thus transformed into a laurel tree before the god managed to have it; Bernini has immortalized the exact moment of the metamorphosis, the nymph transmutes into bark and fronds escaping capture in extremis.
