caption: PAPA STEFANO IX (? - 942), born in Rome, elected in 939, confirmation, through a delegate, King Louis IV of France. Because of the death of the second Pope Stephen occurred in 752, before the consecration, not all sources take account of the latter in the numbering of the subsequent homonyms; for this reason the Pope elected in 939 is sometimes considered Pope Stephen VIII.
