caption: EGYPT: Depiction of Maat, goddess of justice, in the form of a woman with a feather on her head, representing the symbol of her name in hieroglyphics. She was the daughter of Ra, the "sun god," and the dispenser of justice. It was to her that the king made offerings during "divine worship," and it was her feather that served as the counterweight to the heart on the scales consulted by Anubis during the "judgment of Osiris." During the Old Kingdom, judges were "priests of Maat," and the vizier, when called upon to perform judicial functions, also became a "priest of Maat." Justice and Truth. Maat also represented universal order, the law by which the world exists in harmony, the strength by which Ra's creation does not fall back into primordial chaos. Print on fabric, 20th century.
