caption: SAINT SIMEON STYLITES (c. 390 – 2 September 459) Syrian saint, Christian, ascetic who became famous for living for 37 years on a small platform placed on top of a column. Other religious men after him followed his example and were called stylites. Woodcut by Michael Wolgemut (1434 – 30 November 1519) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (before 1472 – January 1494) from the work ''Die Schedelsche Weltchronick'' (Schedel's Universal Chronicles, also known as the Nuremberg Chronicles) by the German physician, historian, cartographer and humanist Hartmann Schedel (13 February 1440 – 28 November 1514), one of the first illustrated incunabula that was not a strictly religious book, dedicated to the history of the world from creation to the present, with a perspective on the end times and the Last Judgement; published by Anton Koberger (c. 1440 – 3 October 1503), Nuremberg, 1493.
