caption: POPE URBAN II (approximately 1040 - 1099), born Otto of Lords of Chatillon, France, elected in 1087, was the promoter of the Council of Clermont, in which he called the West's armed aid in favor of the emperor of Constantinople request Alexius I, thus promoting the first crusade: the image blesses an army of crusaders. He strove to fight simony and lay investiture, in favor of the monastic celibacy and the monastic rules reform.
