OLYMPICS Greece: the Greek athlete Spiridon Louis (12 January 1873 – 26 March 1940) photographed at an advanced age in traditional costume with the gold medal pinned to his chest. He was the first winner of the 42 km marathon, at the first modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens. The race was proposed by the French philologist Michel Breal to commemorate Philippides, the Greek soldier who died exhausted after bringing the news of the victory over the Persians at Marathon (490 BC) to the Athenians.
