caption: MAXIMILIAN I° (1459-1519) ''Theuerdank in ship''. Page from a rare copy of one of the most important illustrated books of the first half of the 16th century. This remarkable work was inspired and written with the assistance of the court poet Melchior Pfintzing by Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg, in the tradition of the epic poem in verse; it tells of the journey undertaken by Maximilian himself as a young man (to be identified in the character of Theuerdank, literally the knight ''of noble thought'') to obtain the hand of Mary of Burgundy (in the novel Ehrenreich, the most prestigious heiress of Europe ). The book is illustrated with 118 valuable woodcuts by Jost de Negker based on drawings by Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schaeufelein and Leonhard Beck. The edition of the work was only 40 copies, printed on very high quality parchment by Hans Schönsperger the Elder as a tribute to the friends of the Emperor ''Theuerdank'', and 300 paper copies. Augsburg, 1517.
