caption: Massive funerals in Barletta for Giuseppe Di Corato, Giuseppe Spadaro, and Giuseppe Lojodice, killed on March 14, 1956, when police opened fire on approximately 4,000 starving people who were demonstrating against discrimination by the Pontifical Aid Organization, which had been tasked by the city administration with distributing food and clothing parcels from abroad to alleviate the dire famine caused by the extreme and prolonged bad weather.
