caption: JOBS Florence, struggle at Pignone: workers assigned to the plant's canteen, performing various kitchen and service tasks, are photographed in the courtyard next to the kitchens. When the owners decided to lay off everyone and shut down the plant, the work continued under self-management for a long period, from November 1953 to January 1954, to stave off the spectre of unemployment for 1,750 workers. The protest attracted widespread support, and the dispute ultimately concluded with Eni's acquisition of the disused foundry from Snia Viscosa.
