title: ATLANTIS ACCORDING TO IGNATIUS DONNELLY

subject date: 2004-05-21

caption: CARTOGRAPHY Plate with map and connecting bridges from ''Atlantis, the Antediluvian World'', a treatise by the American Ignatius Donnelly (November 3, 1831 - January 1, 1901) published in 1882. According to Donnelly, Atlantis was the biblical Earthly Paradise and the first civilizations had developed there. Its inhabitants had scattered throughout America, Europe and Asia; its kings and queens had become the Gods of the ancient religions. Then, about thirteen thousand years ago, the entire continent had been submerged by a cataclysm of volcanic origin. In support of his thesis, Donnelly adduced the cultural analogies described above, and some geological evidence. United States of America, 19th century.
