caption: OLYMPIAS (375 - 316 BC), Epirote princess born Myrtale, third wife of Philip II of Macedon; exiled by her husband in 357 BC, she was soon recalled to court upon the news of her pregnancy, from which Alexander (the Great) was born in 356 BC; at the same time Philip gave her the name Olympias, to celebrate his victory in the Olympic Games. The couple then gave birth to Cleopatra. After Philip's fourth marriage, their relationship was definitively ruined, Olympias retired to Epirus with her brother Alexander I until the wedding of her daughter Cleopatra, during which the king was killed by his bodyguard Pausanias of Orestis, perhaps out of personal grudges, perhaps because of a plot in which Olympias was not entirely unconnected. After helping Alexander to free himself from rivals in the succession, she was also ousted from places of power by her son, while maintaining normal family relationships. Profile portrait from a gold medallion from the Roman era, 3rd century.
