caption: RESISTANCE Sant'Anna di Stazzema (Lucca). Amos Moriconi, one of the very few survivors and witnesses of the massacre of 12 August 1944 by the Germans, who exterminated the population of the village as a terrorist act to discourage any collaboration with the partisan activity. The hamlet of Sant'Anna was crowded because it had been declared a "white zone" by the Germans, that is, authorized to welcome the displaced civilian population; the total number of victims was about 560, including women and children. His wife Claudina and daughter Nora were killed by the ferocity of the Nazis. Photograph, Italy, 20th century.
