caption: RESISTANCE Sant'Anna di Stazzema, scene of the massacre carried out by the Germans on 12 August 1944, who exterminated the population of the town as a terrorist act to discourage any collaboration with the partisan activity. The hamlet of Sant'Anna was crowded because it had been declared a "white zone" by the Germans, that is, authorized to welcome the displaced civilian population; the total number of victims was approximately 560, including women and children. The burial cross of Vivalda Bernabò, one of the victims among the locals, who now has her tombstone with her husband Gabriello Pieri in the monumental Ossuary on Col di Cava, inside the "National Peace Park". Photograph, Stazzema (LU), 20th century.
