title: RELIC OF THE MOST HOLY NAIL

subject date: 2004-04-07

caption: RELIC ''A brief statement of the Most Holy Nail. Which is found in the most sumptuous Cathedral of the City of Milan. How it was found, formed into a Bridle, and ended up in this most glorious Metropolis.''. According to Christian tradition, the Empress Helena identified the Holy Nails and the True Cross during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 327-328; she left the Cross in Jerusalem and brought the nails back to Rome: she had one set in the helmet of her son Constantine I (from whom the Iron Crown originated), with another she had the bit for her horse forged, so that both would be protected in battle; this last nail would be the one then kept and venerated in the Cathedral of Milan. ''In Milan in the Monza Press for Carlo Federico Gagliardi. With permission of the Superiors, and Privilege''. Italy, circa 1695
