caption: Gerolamo DEL PACKIA (1477-1535) and collaborator: "San Galgano". Galgano Guidotti was born in Chiusdino in about 1148/1152, today in the province of Siena, but at that time a fortified fief of the bishop of Volterra. There is no certain information about his life before conversion: it is said that, born of a family of local nobility and therefore a knight initiated into a military career, he twice dreamed of Saint Michael inviting him to follow him. His horse then, refusing to continue well twice in a row, led him to the place of his conversion. Here, in the Christmas of 1180, Galgano infused his sword into the rock and retired to a hermit's life. This period lasted 11 months, during which Galgano went to Rome to Pope Alexander III. He died on November 30, 1181. The hermit was buried next to the sword and the place immediately became a destination for the faithful. Painting on panel, XVI century.
