title: JEWISH COMMUNITIES EXTERMINATED BY THE GERMANS

subject date: 2004-02-26

caption: CRUSADES ''Massacre of Jews by the Crusaders'' who attack the ghetto, capture men and women, break through the defenses and set it on fire; place and date unspecified. It could be an episode of the German Crusade, at the formation of the First Crusade in the 11th century, when the troops under the command of Gottschalk, Volkmar and Count Emicho of Leiningen began to move through the Rhineland attacking the Jewish communities, in defiance of the Emperor's orders, interpreting in their own way the religious motivations linked to the crusade, but also venting the resentment for the debts contracted with the same communities to participate in it; after having attacked Spira, Worms and Mainz, they arrived in Cologne and found that the Jewish community had taken refuge in the countryside; they then set fire to the Synagogue and killed a man and a woman who refused to convert, then continued towards the Moselle valley and Hungary, where after having committed other massacres they were finally stopped by King Coloman (see elaboration in FSNgilardi_77541.jpg). Engraving from a 19th century historical treatise.
