caption: Leandro ARPINATI (29 February 1892 – 22 April 1945), Italian politician and squadrista. A controversial figure, he was a historic leader of Bolognese fascism, then an opponent of Mussolini from 1933, he was shot by the partisans in April 1945. Photographic portrait taken some time before the shooting, after refusing Mussolini's invitation to join the RSI (which came after ten years of dissent, persecution and sendings to confinement) and retiring to his estate in Malacappa, where he had given refuge to former Allied prisoners with the protection of the National Liberation Committee.
