caption: John MILTON (9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674) ''And they, so perfect is their misery''. From the work ''Comus'', which the English poet wrote in 1634 inspired by a pastoral drama, a ''masque'', that is, a fantastic representation of the type in vogue since the Elizabethan age. Comus is a necromancer, son of Circe and Bacchus, who transforms lost travellers in the Welsh forest into beasts by seducing them with a spell, and his deception is such that despite their transformation they admire themselves in the mirror. But a virtuous woman, although captured by a trick, resists his flattery and will be saved by her two brothers with the help of the Assistant Spirit. Illustration by Arthur Rackham (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939), United Kingdom 1914.
