caption: SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA (280/290 – 305 approx.) Scene of her martyrdom: subjected to the torture of the cogwheel for not having consented to convert to paganism or even to marry the Roman emperor, as soon as she was placed on the wheel the sky darkens and a bolt of lightning (the angel with the sword) falls and splits the instrument of torture; the emperor then has her beheaded, and from her neck flows not blood but milk, a symbol of her purity. Detail from the frescoes attributed to the school of Manfredino and Franceschino Boxilio on the central column in the oratory of Sant'Antonio (14th century), inside the hermitage of Sant'Alberto da Butrio.
