title: CARNIVAL OF COMBE-FROIDE

subject date: 2003-11-27

caption: CARNIVAL ''Landzette''. In the Combe-Froide, the valley of the Great St. Bernard that connects the city of Aosta with Switzerland, during the days of Carnival various masquerades take place. The Landzette are the true protagonists of the Carnival: with colorful masks and clothes, inspired by military uniforms but covered in mirrors and multicolored ribbons, they express both elegance and aggression. Their action is in fact characterized by provocative attacks on those who are outside the ritual, today scaled down to the limits of good taste, but once marked by behavior bordering on violence. Around their waist they wear a heavy belt with bells and a cowbell often used for erotic allusions while in their hand they hold a ponytail to tease the spectators.
