caption: HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY candid photograph of the murder of Rubin Stacy, a homeless black sharecropper, lynched on a false charge of assaulting a woman; several little girls witness the bloody scene. In custody due to complaints from white citizens whose doors he had knocked on asking for work and bread, six policemen were overpowered by a hundred masked men who took Stacy from the prison, dragged him with a rope around his neck, and shot him before and after hanging him. Although the faces of those present are clearly recognizable in the photo, no one was ever prosecuted for this action, since there was no federal law against lynching yet. Florida, July 19, 1935.
