caption: PIUS XI (31 May 1857 - 10 February 1939), Achille Ratti, blessing on the gestation chair. Bronze statue of the monument created by Alberto Dresler (1878-1949), located in Piazza Conciliazione, in front of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Materno in Desio, the Pope's hometown. Wanted and financed by the mayor Giulio Gavazzi to celebrate the most illustrious fellow citizen on 11 February 1929 he had agreed the Lateran Pacts (remembered in a bas-relief panel on the base), the first stone of the monument was laid with ceremony in the presence of civil and ecclesiastical authorities on 29 June 1929, and the inauguration took place exactly one year later, on 29 June 1930.
