caption: CELESTINE V (1209 - 1296), an ascetic monk, was proclaimed Pope after a long period of vacancy of the papal throne, during which the Conclave was unable to agree on the election of any of the Cardinals. During his short mandate he enjoyed the support of Charles of Anjou, and for this reason he moved his residence to Naples, to Castel Nuovo; after a few months of pontificate, on 13 December 1294, during a consistory he announced that ''driven by legitimate reasons, due to the humility and weakness of my body and the malignity of the plebs, in order to recover the lost tranquility with the consolation of my former life'', he would renounce the burden and honor of the throne, leaving the nomination of the new Pope to the Conclave.
