caption: James MURRAY (7 February 1837 – 26 July 1915), British lexicographer and linguist, university professor and psychologist, worked on the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (published in 1928 as the New English Dictionary) with the American William Minor, a surgeon in the American Civil War and a murderer. Minor contributed thousands of words, yet it was only after twenty years of correspondence with his most prolific collaborator that Murray discovered that Minor was writing to him not from home but from the walls of Broadmoor Criminal Insane Asylum.
