caption: ELIZABETH of Russia (29 December 1709 – 5 January 1762), after a ten-year dispute over succession on the death in 1727 of her mother Catherine I, second wife of Peter the Great, became Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death. She secretly married the Cossack Alexei Grigor'evič Razumovsky. Having no children, she designated her Prussian nephew Charles Peter Ulrich, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, as her successor, summoning him to court in 1742 to prepare him for the throne to which he ascended as Peter III of Russia.
