PETER III of Russia (21 February 1728 – 17 July 1762) Tsar from 5 January 1762 to 9 July 1762. Son of Charles Frederick of Holstein-Gottorp and Tsarina Anna Petrovna Romanova (and therefore matrilineal nephew of Peter I the Great), he succeeded his aunt Elizabeth who had designated him heir to the throne since 1742, snatching him from the Prussian court and arranging his marriage in 1745 to Sophia Augusta Federica of Anhalt-Zerbst. Intimately Prussian, a convinced Lutheran but converted to Orthodox Christianity for reasons of state, he never bonded with the Russian people and the imperial guard, nor with his wife, crowned as Tsarina Catherine II, who managed to have him imprisoned, assuming power in person and going down in history as Catherine the Great.
