caption: PALERMO Coat of arms of the capital of the Sicily region: red Samnite shield with a golden eagle langued grasping a silver band bearing the initials ''SPQP''. It is said that it was a Phoenician colony; Carthage owned it and in 254 BC it became a Roman municipality. In the 6th century the Goths took it; in the 9th the Arabs. In 1072, under Roger II the Norman, it became a commercial centre of Europe and Asia. Chromolithograph, Edition A. Brioschi & C., Milan circa 1935.
