ESTE (Padua) It is the ancient Ateste, an important center of the Venetians between the 10th and 3rd centuries BC; then allied with Rome. In the 10th century it was enfeoffed by Otto I to a Lombard family who later called themselves Este from the place. When the Este family moved to Ferrara in 1275, it passed under the rule of Padua. Gold shield, with a red castle, turreted with two pieces of the same, the castle wall in the shape of a roe deer, crenellated, is surmounted by a third red tower, higher and crenellated: the whole walled and windowed in black: the open door of the field, charged with a red Latin cross and topped by the golden Lion of San Marco.
