CATANIA Provincial capital. It was a pre-Greek town, occupied in 729 BC by a colony of Chalcidians, and soon became an important city, located between the valleys of Noto and Demana. Golden shield with an elephant in profile, purple-red in color with tusks facing left (heraldic right) on a natural meadow; in front, Saint Agatha armed with a spear and an oval shield with the effigy of an eagle.
