caption: ALASSIO (Savona) An important centre on the western Ligurian Riviera, which flourished in the past for trade, navigation and fishing. In the 19th century it became a tourist resort. Azure shield, with a tower walled in black, crenellated in the Guelph style, with a woman crowned in gold and dressed in ermine, emerging from the tower, holding in her right hand a sceptre, placed in a band, in gold. The woman is said to be Adelasia (or Alasia), daughter of Emperor Otto I of Saxony, who, according to local legend, founded the city of Alassio together with Aleramo del Monferrato in the 10th century.
