English ships attack Chinese junks off Canton in 1839, following the action of Canton Governor Lin Tze-Hsu, who forced the English to hand over all the opium in their possession and dispersed it at sea. Eventually, however, he succumbed to British force and with the Treaty of Nanking (29 August 1842) the opium trade was reinstated and new concessions were granted to the English.
