CHINA First Opium War between China and England, 1839 - 1842. British ships attack Chinese junks off the coast of Canton in 1839, in response to the actions of Governor Lin Zexu (30 August 1785 – 22 November 1850), who had seized all the opium from British-controlled imperial territories in their possession and intended to destroy it by dispersing it at sea. The British were attempting to impose the drug trade illegally, even though it was prohibited in China except for its medicinal uses. Eventually, however, the governor succumbed to British force, and with the Treaty of Nanking (29 August 1842), the opium trade was reinstated and new concessions were granted to the British. Painting, 19th century.
