subject date: 2008-01-10

caption: Mohandas Karamchand GANDHI (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948). ''Gandhi's victory. To put an end to the massacres in India, tormented by racial and religious hatred, the famous Gandhi had decided to fast until death if the people of his country did not reconcile. Impressed by this extreme decision, the leading Indian figures, after five days in which Gandhi had not eaten, agreed to sign the peace conditions set by the old patriot.'' The Mahatma once again used the weapon of fasting to pacify exasperated souls, and his peace proposals were finally accepted; five days after the publication of this magazine he was tragically assassinated in New Delhi by Nathuram Godse (19 May 1910 – 15 November 1949), a Hindu politician, journalist and terrorist. Illustration by Walter Molino (November 5, 1915 – December 8, 1997) for the cover of "La Domenica del Corriere," the illustrated weekly supplement of the new Corriere della Sera. Milan, January 25, 1948.
