title: CAESAR REPLACES CLEOPATRA ON THE THRONE OF EGYPT - CAESAR'S MARRIAGE TO CALPURNIA

subject date: 2002-07-09

caption: JULIUS CAESAR (13 July 101 BC or 12 July 100 BC – 15 March 44 BC) ''Caesar restores Cleopatra to the throne of Egypt'' after the Battle of the Nile in 47 BC, and banishes from the kingdom Arsinoe IV (c. 68 BC – 41 BC), sister and contender to the throne of Cleopatra (70/69 BC – 12 August 30 BC). The canvas has also been taken up with a second interpretation: ''Caesar repudiates Pompey and marries Calpurnia''; Calpurnia Pisonia (75 BC – after 44 BC) was the fourth and last wife of the consul from 59 BC, three years after the scandal that resulted in the repudiation of Pompey Sulla, so the two women were not directly rivals, the episode would have a completely allegorical reading. Painting by Pietro da Cortona (Pietro Berrettini, 1 November 1597 – 16 May 1669), Italy, circa 1637-1643.
