Francesco MOROSINI the Peloponnesian (26 February 1619 – 6 January 1694), Admiral of the Republic of Venice, was the 108th Doge of the Republic of Venice. He defended Candia from the Ottoman siege for 23 years, capitulating on 27 September 1669. The Duchy of Candia or Kingdom of Candia was a colony of the Republic of Venice established on the island of Crete, renamed Candia by the Venetians, from 1212 to 1669. Portrayed in a colored engraving by Giuseppe Fusinati (1803–1883), Italy 1857.
