caption: Mohandas Karamchand GANDHI (1869-1948) A poster portraying Gandhi with the phrase 'My life is my message'; this manifesto is inside Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, in the state of Gujarat; in 1915 Ahmedabad became famous as the site of Gandhi's ashram, now a national monument. It was Gandhi's headquarters during India's long struggle for independence; he founded it in 1915 and moved it to its present site a few years later. From here, on March 12, 1930, the Mahatma left for the famous Salt March. The unadorned rooms where Gandhi lived are now a museum and house numerous images documenting key episodes in Gandhi's life.
