PANCH MAHAL, a four-tiered pyramid pavilion located in Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a ghost city in the Agra district. It was the political capital of the Indian Mughal Empire under Akbar from 1571 to 1585, when it was abandoned due to lack of water. With the construction of his residence at Fatehpur Sikri ("the city of victory"), the Great Mughal Akbar left his descendants a city in pure Mughal style. Construction lasted a total of ten years and created a fairytale capital nestled on the hills and characterized by splendid palaces and terraces. However, Akbar was soon forced to abandon his creation due to lack of water. Nine gates provide access to the city, which is surrounded by a 6 km long wall, uniformly built of red sandstone.
