caption: SAN GALLO Hermit in Bregenz (550 circa - 16 October 645) Hermit monk of Irish origin, disciple of San Colombano, offers bread to a bear. Legend has it that one day St. Gallen, while he was praying, saw a bear come near to feed on the remains of the meal and to feed a lean fire burning to warm a sick person. Gallus would take a thorn from the bear's foot and this out of gratitude would help him build his monastery. Ivory on binding of a breviary of St. Gall. Germany 820 AD
