ISMAIL PASHA (31 December 1830 – 2 March 1895). Khedive of Egypt (1863-1879). Son of Ibrahim Pasha, he succeeded his uncle Said. Committed to modernizing the country, he was overwhelmed by a terrifying public debt, which he then used to pay off by selling his shares in the Suez Canal to Great Britain (1875). For the inauguration of the Canal, he commissioned a hymn from Giuseppe Verdi. After various vicissitudes, Giuseppe Verdi accepted, and the result was the opera Aida, which premiered at the Cairo Opera House on the evening of 24 December 1871. Portrayed in a coloured engraving of the time, 19th century.
