caption: Ippolito NIEVO (30 November 1831 – 4 March 1861), Italian writer and patriot, follower of Mazzini, took part in the Second War of Independence and in the Expedition of the Thousand, and died in a shipwreck on his return from the latter. Famous above all for his novel ''The Confessions of an Italian'' (1857-58), published posthumously with the title ''Confessions of an Octogenarian'' (1867).
