caption: MAXIMIL OF HABSBURG (July 6, 1832 – June 19, 1867), Archduke of Austria, Governor of Lombardy-Venetia, in Imperial Navy uniform. Brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, in 1864 a junta of Mexican oligarchs, in agreement with the French who occupied the country (French expedition to Mexico), offered him the crown of Emperor of Mexico, but guerrilla warfare led by Juarez overthrew European domination. Arrested, he was shot. Portrait in an oval in a painting from around 1857 attributed to Jean-François Portaels (1818–1895) or Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873), from which this 19th-century oleograph is based.
