caption: CARMAGNOLA (Francesco da Bussone known as Carmagnola, 1380-1432) Italian nobleman, leader and captain of fortune; supreme commander of the troops of the Serenissima, on 5 May 1432 he was executed in full view of his wife and daughters by order of the Venetian Senate, on charges of treason in favor of his former patrons of the Duchy of Milan. Alessandro Manzoni took inspiration from his figure for his first tragedy ''The Count of Carmagnola'' (1820).
