She was killed in Auschwitz, deported because of her Jewish origins. "We bow profoundly before the testimony of the life and death of Edith Stein, an illustrious daughter of Israel and at the same time a daughter of Carmel. Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, a personality who brought into her intense life a dramatic synthesis of our century, a synthesis rich in deep wounds that still bleed; at the same time, the synthesis of a full truth beyond man, in a heart that remained restless and unsatisfied for so long, until it finally found peace in God." These words were spoken by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of Edith Stein's beatification in Cologne, May 1, 1987.
