The carnival game remained in vogue for two centuries (eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) and took place on the evening of Shrove Tuesday, at the height and conclusion of the crazy celebrations before the start of Lenten penitence with Ash Wednesday. Anyone who participated, without distinction of gender, age or social class, had to go to Via del Corso in a mask and with a candle, lamp or torch lit: they had to try to keep their own flame alive and at the same time extinguish those of others. Anyone who suffered the blowout had to remove their mask, becoming the target of ridicule.
