caption: The Battle of Nicopolis, fought on September 25, 1396, between the Crusader allies who wanted to reconquer Bulgaria and the Saracens, ended in Ottoman victory. Bayezid I's infantry was protected by sharpened stakes dotting the terrain, which the Franco-Hungarian heavy cavalry attacked. The newly acquired territory remained with the Ottomans: after the death of Mehmet II, the Turks expanded from the Euphrates to the Carpathians. Miniature, 15th century.
