caption: Marquise de MONTESPAN (Françoise Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Montermart, 1641 - 1707), daughter of the Marquis de Montermart, was the queen's maid of honor. In 1663, she married Pardaillan de Gondrin. Her beauty, grace, and wit attracted Louis XIV, who preferred her to Madame de la Valliere, his previous favorite. Their relationship produced eight children. The marquise dominated the king from 1668 to 1682, but, caught up in the poisoning scandal, she left court and retired to the community of Saint-Joseph.
