caption: MARQUISE DE MAINTENON (Françoise d'Aubigné, 1635 - 1719) was born in the prison of Niort. Raised as a Protestant, she was orphaned at an early age and entrusted to a relative, where she converted to Catholicism. On the verge of falling into poverty, she married, out of charity, the poet Scarron in 1652. Widowed in 1660, she was entrusted with raising the children of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, whose mistress she later took. Upon the death of Maria Theresa, she secretly married the king in 1684. Portrait, lithograph, France, 19th century.
