A key figure in the Italian Risorgimento, he championed the formation of a national identity, which he supported from exile, forced into hiding by numerous convictions for his unwavering faith in a state founded on the Democratic Republic, which he refused to sacrifice by submitting to a collaboration with the Savoy monarchy. Beginning with Young Italy, he founded several republican political movements in the places of his exile, united in the collaboration for Young Europe, which, in addition to the emancipation of states from monarchies, also promoted the emancipation of women through the work of skilled Mazzinian activists. In the portrait, the red of the banner in the background, the republican's white beard, and the green of his tie are a significant allusion to the Italian flag.
