SAINT PATRICK (circa 385-461) patron saint of Ireland, induces the snakes to abandon the island forever by throwing themselves into the sea; at his feet, some clover plants. Breton, he was a slave in Ireland for six years; having returned to his homeland, he entered the clergy; having gone to Gaul he was consecrated bishop; he returned as a missionary to Ireland in around 432 and undertook an important work of conversion to Christianity, during which it is said he used the clover to explain the dogma of the Trinity with the three leaves on a single stem. This depiction is adopted by the syncretic cult to represent the Danbala (Damballah) spirit since Voudun came into contact with the Christian religion practiced by the European colonists who had imported it to the Caribbean. The contamination between the two religions quickly led to the assimilation of Voudun idols with the fundamental figures of Christianity. Chromalithograph image, 1888.
