Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (December 16, 1770 - March 26, 1827) German composer and musician, one of the greatest composers in the history of music. He expanded formally, technically and expressively the classic forms of sonata, quartet and symphony. He was organist, harpsichord and then violinist. In 1787 he went to Vienna to study with Mozart but had to return home soon for family reasons. He came back a few years later to study with Haydn. His musical activity took place almost exclusively in Vienna. In 1795 the first symptoms of his deafness began to manifest; disability became complete in his last years of life, but he continued to make up to death, realizing his most famous and mature works. Portrait of lithograph by Blasius Hofel 1814
